The Sweet Chariot Tour is On!

In mid-September I’ll begin an epic road trip, driving a 45-year-old Mustang convertible named “Sweet Chariot” from coast to coast and back. I’m happy to announce that  Quayside Publishing Group and Zenith Press are supporting the event, which combines a book tour with a tribute to a literary giant.

The Tour
Two years after the end of World War II, a restless young Navy veteran embarked on a cross-country journey of discovery. Hitchhiking most of the way from New York City to California, Jack Kerouac paused at various places to visit friends or work odd jobs. By the time he returned to New York several months later, Kerouac had traveled 6,000 miles and learned much about his beloved America. His autobiographical novel On the Road, based on that trek, became a classic of the 1950s. It’s also the namesake of a newly-completed feature film with a star-studded cast that includes Garrett Hedlund and Viggo Mortensen.
On the 65th anniversary of Kerouac’s journey, I’ll trace his entire route in “Sweet Chariot,” a 1967 Mustang convertible named for my father’s B-29 bomber. During the five-week trip, I’ll record  observations about what has changed across this great country of ours—and what still remains the same. Essays will be posted to this blog site regularly, with future plans for magazine articles and a book.

I am very excited to announce that in addition to direct involvement by Quayside Publishing and Zenith Press, the Sweet Chariot tour is sponsored in part by Dakota Digital and LoJack. Click on the sidebar links and visit their websites for some truly amazing automotive products.
The Book
Throughout the five-week journey, I’ll be making stops in various cities to discuss my newest book, Swashbucklers and Black Sheep: A Pictorial History of Marine Fighting Squadron 214 in World War II. This is my first so-called coffee table book, and I had a lot of fun compiling the material. The result is a lavishly illustrated companion to my earlier books on the Black Sheep Squadron and Pappy Boyington. The staff at Zenith not only outdid themselves with the design and layout, they kept the price reasonable.
